The Prime Minister, Stephen Harper has chosen a new head of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. Earlier this week, Carole Swan had resigned as the head of the Agency.
The new head of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency is none other than the current Vice-President of the agency, George Da Pont.
Many attribute the resignation of Swan to the failure in the listeriosis break out in August 2008. Swan was slated to be the Head of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency for a period of 5 years starting from June 4, 2007. The listeriosis issue in 2008 was so serious that an inquiry was set up to find the reason for the outbreak which resulted in the death of 22 people from consuming spoilt deli meat from a federally regulated source.
The inquiry found out that there were issues related to funding and leadership at the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. There was a high rate of turnover for successive heads. Since then the government has been doling out more funds to the department.
The appointment of George Da Pont will be effective from 11th July. He has been functioning as the Vice President of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency since the last one year and he has served in various senior positions before that in other departments.

Montreal chef Chuck Hughes got a chance to compete on Iron Chef America against reigning champ Bobby Flay. He is the eighth Canadian chef to compete on the show, but he is the first from Quebec, and also the youngest Canadian cook ever on the show. Hughes normally makes French Canadian food at his Garde Manger restaurant in Montreal, and he is also the star of a Canadian series called Chuck's Day Off.

He said that he added a Canadian flair to his dishes on Iron Chef, as he and two of his Garde Manger cooking colleagues worked intensely to create gourmet dishes from a secret ingredient under a very tight time limit. He said that he was sweating buckets and actually had to change his shirt half-way through the competition. Hughes said that he was very vocal as he cooked, talking to the cameras and the show's commentators and even yelling in French at one point.

The Cafe Casse Croute in Orange County, California is a little unassuming restaurant that serves some unique French-Canadian food. The current owners took over in 1990, and they have kept a few items form the original menu but have added in some other food influences as well.

The two Vietnamese ladies who run cafe do everything there, from taking the orders, to cooking the food and cleaning tables. The cafe opens early and always draws a large breakfast crowd, who enjoy breakfast staples like eggs Benedict, which taste homemade. Another specialty is the raisin bread French toast with scrambled eggs and sausage. Crepes are a popular breakfast menu item as well. The French onion soup on the lunch menu is highly recommended, as is the filet mignon with mushrooms and onions. This is served with steamed vegetables on the side and a choice of rice or potatoes.
